Heat is the quietest disaster on the list. It doesn't tear the roof off or put water in the living room. It just sits on a house, day after day, and in a typical year it kills more Americans than hurricanes, tornadoes, or floods.
Here's the part that matters for planning: the grid is most likely to fail exactly when the heat is worst. The same afternoons that are cooking your living room have every air conditioner in the state running flat out, and stressed equipment picks the worst day to quit. A blackout in a heat wave isn't bad luck stacking on bad luck. It's one event. Plan for it as one event.
This is the plan I'd give my own family. None of it requires a generator, and most of it costs almost nothing.
The third night is the one that gets people
A house without power stores heat like a battery. Every afternoon it banks more than the night gives back — the attic, the walls, the slab, all of it radiating back at you long after sundown.
Day one is miserable. Day two is hard. But the third night is the one I want you thinking about, because by then the house may simply never cool down. Your body does its heat recovery overnight; when the bedroom won't drop below the mid-80s, that recovery stops happening, and the stress starts compounding instead. People who were "fine" on day one start going down on day three — and it's usually the folks who told everybody on the phone that morning that they didn't need anything.
So the goal isn't comfort. The goal is protecting sleep and protecting the vulnerable, for as many days as it takes. Everything below serves that.
Cool the person, not the room
You are not going to cool a whole house without power. Stop trying, and put everything into cooling the few square feet a person actually occupies.
Wet skin plus moving air is the only air conditioning you can carry. Soak a bandana, a t-shirt, or a hand towel, put it on your neck and chest, and sit in front of a fan. Re-wet it every twenty or thirty minutes. This is evaporative cooling — the same physics as sweat, without spending your body's water to do it.
Know when a fan stops helping. A fan on dry skin in a room past the mid-90s isn't cooling you anymore; it's blowing oven air across you. The fan earns its keep two ways only: across wet skin, or pulling genuinely cooler outside air through the house after dark. A fan alone in a hot sealed room is a false sense of security, and that false sense is exactly what finds the elderly.
Use water on the pulse points. Wrists and forearms in a basin of cool water, feet in a bucket, cool showers if the pressure's still up. Ten minutes of that drops how you feel more than an hour of sitting still.
Pick one room and defend it. Lowest floor, north or east side, away from the west-facing glass. Everybody lives and sleeps there during the worst of it. One room is defensible. Six aren't.
Work the house like it's equipment
Flush at night, seal by morning. When the outside air finally drops below the inside temperature — usually well after dark — open the house up and move air through it. A fan in one window blowing out, an open window across the house pulling in, and you're exchanging the day's banked heat for the coolest air you'll get. Then, by eight or nine in the morning, shut it all down: windows closed, blinds down, and something over the west-facing glass. Foil, a moving blanket, cardboard — it looks ridiculous and it works. The west side of the house is where the afternoon beating comes from.
Don't add heat indoors. The oven and the stovetop are off-limits; cook outside or eat cold. Every appliance you run is a small heater.
Run the refrigerator on discipline. Closed, a fridge holds safe temperatures about four hours; a full freezer about forty-eight, half-full about twenty-four. Every door-open spends some of that. Decide what you're getting before you touch the handle.
Freeze water now, before you need it. Jugs of water in the freezer today are three things later: they hold the freezer cold longer, they become the cold packs you'll want against somebody's neck, and they melt into drinking water. It's the cheapest piece of emergency equipment that exists.
The water math changes in the heat
The standard rule is one gallon per person per day. That's a mild-weather floor. Sweating through a hundred-degree afternoon, you're realistically at two gallons per person per day, and more for anybody working outside. A family of four planning three days should be thinking around twenty gallons, not twelve. Collapsible water bladders store flat until the forecast turns, and a compact filter covers you past what you stored.
And here's the day-two mistake I want you to know by name: water alone stops being enough. Sweat takes salt out with it. Chug plain water all day while you're sweating heavily and you can dilute your sodium low enough to cause headache, nausea, and confusion — symptoms that look exactly like the heat illness you were trying to prevent. Alternate plain water with electrolytes: I carry CardoMax Hydration because the single-serves need no fridge and live in a kit fine, and any sports drink or oral rehydration mix from the grocery store does the same job. Salty food helps too. Skip the alcohol entirely — it costs you more water than it gives — and go easy on the caffeine.
Heat exhaustion vs. heat stroke — the difference is the brain
I'll give you the same version I use on scene, because knowing this cold is worth more than any gear in this post.
Heat exhaustion looks like this: heavy sweating, skin pale and clammy, headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, maybe cramps. The person is miserable but they're still themselves. The response: get them to the coolest room, strip the extra layers, wet cloths on the neck, armpits, and groin, fan them, and have them sip an electrolyte drink slowly. They should be clearly improving within the hour. If they're not — or they're getting worse — stop managing it yourself and get them to care.
Heat stroke is different, and the difference is the brain. Confusion. Slurred speech. Stumbling. Combative when they're normally not. Passing out. The skin may be hot and dry, but don't wait for dry skin — plenty of people are still sweating when they tip over the edge. This is a 911 call, immediately, and then you go to work while the truck is coming: soak them with water, get those frozen jugs or ice packs against the neck, armpits, and groin, and fan them hard. Aggressive cooling in the first minutes changes the outcome more than anything the ambulance carries. One more thing: if they're confused or vomiting, do not pour water down their throat.
Know who's at risk before day one. Anyone over 65. Babies and pregnant women. Outdoor workers. Anyone on blood-pressure, heart, psychiatric, or allergy medications — a lot of common prescriptions quietly blunt the body's ability to sweat or manage fluids. And pets, who can't tell you and can't sweat.
The worst heat outcomes I've seen weren't outside. They were indoors, windows shut, days in — somebody alone who kept saying they were fine. Put two check-ins a day on the vulnerable people you know: morning and evening, and make at least one of them a knock on the door, not a phone call. On the phone, everybody's fine.
Power for the small stuff
Your phone is your outage map, your cooling-center list, your 911, and your check-in on grandma — it's the one piece of electronics that has to stay alive. Add a headlamp per person and a small battery fan per person, and the nights get a lot more survivable.
If you're running a generator: outside only, twenty feet from the house, never in a garage with the door open, never on a balcony or breezeway. Carbon monoxide takes people after they think the danger has passed — I wrote about exactly how that happens here, and it applies double in the heat, when every window and sliding door is open to catch a breeze.
Know when leaving wins
Sheltering through heat is a strategy, not a commitment. If the outage is running long and the house won't cool, going somewhere with power is the plan — a friend or family member's place, the library, a church, or a city cooling center. Two things make that work:
Fuel up when the forecast turns, not when the outage starts. Gas pumps run on electricity. The tank you fill early is the option you keep.
Decide your trigger in advance. Pick the condition now — an overnight indoor temp your family won't go below, a vulnerable person who isn't bouncing back — and when it's met, go. The people who do worst in these events are almost never the ones who left early. They're the ones who waited to see if it would get better.
The car itself is a backup cooling tool: parked in shade, outside, engine running with the AC on for ten or fifteen minutes at a stretch. Never in a garage, and watch the fuel gauge — that's also your ride out.
