Press Filter Water Bottle — 26 oz, 0.01 Micron Hollow-Fiber Emergency Filter
I carried this bottle for four days in the Truchas Peaks this September. My main filter failed on day one. This is what I drank from the rest of the trip: creek water, straight from the source, pressed through the filter in about 15 seconds.
How it works. Scoop from the stream, push the inner press down through the outer bottle, drink. No hoses, no pumping, no waiting on gravity. 26 oz per fill.
What it filters. A 0.01 micron hollow-fiber membrane, the same class of membrane used in most backcountry filters, with activated carbon for taste. Manufacturer-rated for bacteria, protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium) and sediment. It does not remove viruses. For a questionable source, floodwater, or anything downstream of people or livestock, boil or add bleach after filtering. My How to Make Water Safe article walks through it.
Where it fits. Stored water is your reserve at home. This is the layer you carry: in the truck, in the go-bag, on the trail. Two is one, one is none.
