Almost every preparedness list was written by somebody with a garage.

This one wasn't. It is built for a hall closet — one shelf, folded flat, and light enough to pick up and carry down six flights of stairs if the day comes when you would rather leave than stay.

Four pieces, and every one of them earns the space. The duffel in the photo is not included; the kit ships in its own packaging and fits any bag you already own.

What's inside

  • Three 10-Liter Fold-Flat Water Jugs — about 7.9 gallons, stored flat, filled late. Empty, all three take up less shelf than a folded towel. When a storm is actually on the forecast, you fill them from the tap while municipal water is still clean and pressurized. And unlike a bathtub bladder, every one of them has a handle: full, each weighs about 22 pounds, so you can carry your water down the stairs with you instead of leaving it behind.
  • 0.01-Micron Ultrafiltration Water Filter — storing water and making water are two different jobs, and a small space needs both, because you will never store as much as a house can. Rated for 4,000 liters, it is the same filter that goes in our 72-Hour Family Kit.
  • Two Motion-Sensor LED Headlamps — two, not one. Interior stairwells have no windows and go fully dark day and night, and hands-free matters when you are carrying a child or a bag down the stairs. One shared flashlight is how a household gets separated.
  • Poseidon Nano Power Bank — your phone is your flashlight, your radio, and your only contact with your people until the battery dies. The Nano is pocket-sized, waterproof, MagSafe-ready, and holds its charge for years on a shelf, so it is ready when you reach for it.

How much water this really is

The standard is one gallon per person per day. Three jugs cover one person for a week of drinking and cooking, or two people for three to four days. When the jugs run low, the filter keeps you drinking from fresh water sources. After a flood, filter first and then boil.

What's not in here, and why

No CO alarm. You need one — a battery model, because your hardwired alarm is dead the moment the power is — but any hardware store sells one for about twenty dollars and we are not going to mark that up.

No gloves, wipes, or trash bags. Sanitation is the most skipped part of apartment readiness and one of the fastest ways people get sick after a storm. It is also four dollars at any grocery store. Buy it there. Add it to this shelf.

We would rather tell you the truth about what to buy elsewhere than pad a kit to make the list look longer.

Honest note on shipping: the pieces ship from more than one warehouse, so your kit may arrive in two or three parcels. Every one is tracked.

Built for the 72 hours you shelter in place — and to walk out the door in one hand if it stops being 72 hours.

Stand Ready. Stay Unbreakable.
